Skin care for men in 5 steps

Rough, oily, prematurely ageing and blemish-ridden skin is just not a good look, no matter what gender you are. Skin care was once stereotyped as a woman’s domain. But in this day and age, with so many specially designed skin care products for men on the market, you can no longer get away with using a bar of soap. The truth is that men need to take care of their skin just as much as women do. Most of us are vigilant about taking measures to keep ourselves healthy. So why neglect your skin? After all, it is our largest organ.

It can be hard to know just what steps should be in your skin care regime and what products to use. If you can’t count the steps on one hand you are less likely to stick to them. And using too many products is not great either. So, to make it simple we have compiled our top 5 steps and products.

Face Wash

Why?

Face wash, or cleanser, keeps skin clean by removing excess oil, dirt and sweat that builds up over the course of the day.

Our Pick:

Elemis TFM Deep Cleanse Facial Wash

This face wash is infused with an invigorating blend of oak bark, spearmint and peppermint. The lightweight gel formula will have your skin feeling refreshed and brightened. You’ll love the fresh smell of this cleanser.

How To Use:

Splash your face with water. Pour a small amount of face wash into the palm of your hand and lather onto the skin of your face and neck. Rinse off with warm water. Use every morning and night.

Face Scrub

Why?

Exfoliating your skin with a face scrub will remove any dead skin cells and unblock pores to help give you a closer, more even shave.

Our Pick:

Anthony Facial Scrub

Using Bora Bora white sand as the exfoliant, this scrub gently exfoliates your skin without removing natural oils. This is the ideal pre-shave treatment as it acts to lift up each hair at the root.

How To Use:

Apply in the same way as your daily face wash, making sure to remove all residue thoroughly. This intense clean is only needed two to three times a week.

Moisturiser

Why?

After stripping your skin of excess oils and dirt through the cleansing process it is important to rehydrate by applying a moisturiser. If you don’t use a moisturiser post face wash your skin will become excessively dry and prone to breakouts.

Our Pick:

Save The Males Multi-Benefit Moisturiser by Origins

I was recommended this moisturiser by a colleague and have never looked back. This oil-free lotion can be used on all skin types. It contains Chinese Wolfberry and Mangosteen extract that have antioxidants to help prevent the signs of ageing.

How To Use:

Squeeze a small amount into the palm of hands and warm together. Smooth over the face and neck after using your face wash or face scrub. Use every morning and night.

Face Mask

Why?

Regular cleansing removes surface dirt, but only a facial mask will actually draw out impurities from beneath the top layers of the epidermis. Using a face mask semi-regularly will help make your other skin care products work more effectively.

Our Pick:

Aesop Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque

This mask is great for getting to the root of the problems and impurities that plague your skin. The natural ingredients include parsley seed and rose-hip seed.

How To Use:

After using your face wash place a hot towel on your face for a few minutes to open up your pores. You may feel pretty ridiculous doing this but it will help the mask do its work. Apply generously to skin and neck and leave on for approximately 10 minutes (check the packaging for precise guidelines). Wash off with warm water and complete by applying your usual moisturiser. It is recommended to use a face mask twice a week. But if you are a bit slack like me, whenever you remember is better than nothing.

Concealer

Why?

This last step may be a bit controversial for most men. Concelers have a stigma to them because they are very close to the world of makeup. But the fact is that blemishes and dark circles under the eyes effect men as well as women. So why not swallow your pride and cover them up?

Our Pick:

Menaji Camo Camouflage Stick

This invisible concealing agent for men is our favourite because it is completely undetectable once blended and very easy to use. It was originally developed in the US for actors and business men in the public eye.

How To Use:

Make sure your hands are clean first then dab a small amount onto the problem area using your index finger or directly from tube. Lightly blend with finger tip until it is undetectable.
